About
A Base of Peace is a space for the exchange of ideas about the socio-political situation in Latin America. It is opposed to violence and to the installation of United States military bases in Latin America. But fundamentally it promotes a culture of peace.
Characteristics
The Base of Peace is made up of individuals and civil organisations that wish to promote peace movements opposed to the dreadful attempts of war carried on by the United States in Latin America
The Base of Peace is permanent. It organizes meetings, colloquiums, debates and social gatherings with the purpose of informing people and exchanging ideas about the socio-political situation in Latin America regarding U.S. military presence. These activities can be held in different cities like Montréal, Québec, Ottawa and Toronto
A Base of Peace is not institutional. It is created and kept by civil organizations and individuals. The orientation and actions of a Base of Peace are the expression of a civil social process.
History
Being an idea of Venezuela’s president, Hugo Chávez, the first Bases of Peace were created in this country in 2009.
They were created with the purpose of answering in a pacific way to the threat that represents for all the countries in Latin America, the United States occupation of seven military bases in Colombian territory.
The first Base of Peace was named “General Cipriano Castro” and it was created in Urena, Venezuela the 14th of august 2009. A second base was created the 26th of August of the same year in Paraguaipa.
Since then, several Bases of Peace have been created by citizens and social organizations at first in South America (Nicaragua, Mexico, Cuba) and then in other countries like France. Today, in Canada, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal have been inspired by this idea and have their own Bases of Peace.
